تعمل شركة فايسبوك على مواجهة هيمنة شركة غوغل على تطبيقات الإنترنت، وذلك بتطوير نظام تشغيل بديل خاص بالواقع المعزز والافتراضي، ليكون بديلا لنظام الأندرويد.
وتطور فايسبوك مشروع يدعى Oxygen أكسجين، حيث تعمل عليه سرا منذ 2013، وظيفته المساعدة في نشر تطبيقات أندرويد خارج متجر غوغل بلاي، حسبما ذكر موقع تك كرانش.
وتستثمر فايسبوك بقوة في تقنيات الواقع الافتراضي والمعزز كونها تقنيات المستقبل، ولديها مقر رئيسي لفريق هذه التقنيات يتسع لـ 4 آلاف موظف على مسافة قريبة من مقر الشركة الرئيسي، وسيكون هناك عاملين من ولايات أخرى، كما تعتزم الشركة افتتاح مكان رسمي للعامة يمكنهم زيارته وتجربة تقنيات الواقع المعزز والافتراضي ومنتجاتها المختلفة.
وتطور فايسبوك أيضا، خدمة مساعد صوتي خاصة بها على غرار سيري و أليكسا، وتتعاون مع مايكروسوفت للحصول على البيانات من محرك البحث بنغ لتدريب مساعدها.
ومن المنتظر أن تبقى فيسبوك متواجدة على أندرويد كتطبيقات، لكنها، وبحسب مسؤوليها، تبحث التعاون مع شركات أخرى لتطوير نظام تشغيل مخصص مبني للواقع المعزز على التحديد ليشغّل أجهزتها.
وتريد فيسبوك أن تتحكم بكل أجزاء المنظومة، وليس فقط الأجهزة والعتاد وبرمجياتها، بل حتى نظام التشغيل الذي يعمل فيها والتطبيقات، لاسيما في الواقع الافتراضي والمعزز.
