نبهت تقارير دولية، مؤخرا، إلى أن “الكفن النووي” في جزر مارشال، صار يهددُ بتسربات خطيرة، بسبب ضعف القبة الإسمنتية التي تغطيه منذ عقود بما يحمله من مواد مشعة.
وفي 1958، أجرت الولايات المتحدة تجربة نووية في جزر مارشال، واختبرت قنبلة صغيرة، لكن التداعيات كانت كارثية، لأنها أدت إلى إحداث حفرة كبيرة، وفي محاولة إلى حل أزمة النفايات النووية الخطيرة، أقامت الولايات المتحدة القبة الاسمنتية، لكن هذه الأخيرة لم تعد صلبة بما يكفي، وفي أحدث تصريح بشأن الأزمة، أعرب الأمين العام لمنظمة الأمم المتحدة، أنطونيو غوتيريس عن قلقه الكبير..
وبعد ما يقارب عشرين سنة من تفجير قنبلة “كاكتوس” في جزيرة رونيت، ألقى الجيش الأميركي في الحفرة التي أحدثها، نفايات ملوثة من عشرات التجارب الأخرى،وجرت تغطية كل مخلفات التجارب النووية الأميركية في جزر مارشال، عام 1979، ثم وُضعت عليها قبة من الاسمنت يبلغ قطرها 115 مترا وسمكها 45 سنتيمترا، فيما بات يعرف بـ”الكفن النووي”.
ويخشى خبراء احتمال تسرب مواد مشعة إلى المياه، فبعد أربع سنوات من تعرضها لعوامل الطبيعة، ظهرت تشققات في القبة، فيما يهددها ارتفاع مستوى المياه الناجم عن ارتفاع حرارة الأرض.
وقال جاك أدينغ الذي يمثل المنطقة في برلمان مارشال، إن القبة التي تقع وسط طبيعة خلابة على بعد بضعة أمتار من مياه المحيط الهادىء “أمر رهيب”.مضيفاً “إنها محشوة بمواد ملوثة مشعة مثل البلوتونيوم-239 إحدى المواد الأكثر تسمما وخطرا على الإنسان” .
